Women on the Move: Tales of Bicycles, Bi-Planes, and Big Cars

Article sponsored by Ramapo Times Career Search

On Thursday, May 9, at 7:30 pm, the Mahwah Museum Lecture Series will present “Women on the Move: Tales of Bicycles, Bi-Planes and Big Cars,” by Carol W. Greene and Lindsey Greene Barrett at the Educational Building at the Ramapo Reformed Church, 100 Island Rd in Mahwah.

A transportation revolution began to transform the world in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The bicycle brought independent mobility to all who used it, especially women. Automobiles and airplanes challenged adventurous individuals to risk their lives as they competed with one another setting time and distance records. Brave women as well as men climbed into the driver’s seat or the cockpit every day, making history in motoring and flying.

This program, illustrated with vintage pictures, will highlight pioneers such as Alice Huyler Ramsey of Hackensack, NJ, first woman to drive coast-to-coast in 1909; Blanche Scott, who soloed in 1910, became a stunt pilot, and flew at Teterboro Airport; the extraordinary but little-known Beryl Markham, a contemporary of Amelia Earhart, who flew the Atlantic in 1936; and spectacular race car driver, Helle Nice. Barrett and Greene will provide interesting insights into these admirable personalities—truly heroines of their day, and will exhibit motoring and flying costumes worn in their exciting pursuits.

Admission is $3.00 for non-members, members and children free.  Refreshments will be served.  To reserve seats for this lecture, email  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , contact www.mahwahmuseum.org or call 201-512-0099.

History of the Rockland County Executive's Historic Preservation Merit Awards Program

Since 1991, the Awards Committee, comprised of some 8 members, created by and coordinated by the HSRC, has presented over 60 awards to public agencies, private individuals, community-based and religious organizations in recognition of their preservation efforts in the County. The Committee also supports continued, critical action to help save Rockland County's environmentally sensitive areas and endangered architecture. Instituted to preserve the rich historical heritage of the County, the annual program celebrates each May with a declaration of "Rockland County Preservation Week" by the County Executive, a festive dinner and awards ceremony.

With a rapidly growing population of newcomers to the area, one challenge has been to help the public understand the value of preservation as well as being involved in their community. Addressing this challenge, the Preservation Awards program has:

  • awarded preservation efforts of individuals and groups
  • increased awareness of our historic resources
  • helped local communities to recapture history and pride of place
  • advocated for the purchase of endangered sites for the public good
  • attempted to unite all five townships in the support of historic preservation

The awards, made by the Committee for preservation efforts on homes, businesses and structures both modest and grand, help to get out the word that it is in everyone's interest to restore and retain the richness of the past. The process is self-fulfilling, and it helps to unify and inspire a community.
