Spring Valley Man Charged in $6557 Benefits Swindle

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe today announced that Archange Gay (DOB 01/13/65) of60 East Eckerson Road, Spring Valley, New York was arraigned on a Felony Complaint charging him with:

  • One count of Welfare Fraud in the Third Degree, a class “D” Felony

Between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010, Gay illegally received $6,557.64 in Medicaid assistancefrom the Rockland County Department of Social Services by allegedly underreporting his 2010 earnings fromemployment with the Student Bus Company.

According to the charges, the defendant submitted false information in support of a recertification applicationfor the public benefits.

Gay was arrested following a joint probe by the Rockland County Special Investigations Unit and theInvestigation Unit of the Rockland County Department of Social Services.

The Department of Social Services provides an opportunity for violators to make restitution prior to the filingof criminal charges. Because Gay failed to pay back all or part of the money, the case was turned over theDistrict Attorney for investigation and arrest.

The defendant was arraigned in the Village of Spring Valley Justice Court before the Honorable David Fried andreleased on his own recognizance.

He is due to return to court on June 20, 2012.

Gay faces up to seven years in state prison, if convicted.
