Rockland County District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe today announced that Rony Veras (DOB 05/28/89) of 38 Conklin Avenue, Haverstraw, New York has been sentenced to a determinate term of five years in state prison on his March, 2012 conviction after a jury trial on the sole count of the indictment charging him with:
On August 7, 2011, at approximately 5:30 a.m., Veras fired a revolver towards the Haverstraw Middle School in the Village of Haverstraw.
The defendant was identified by members of the Town of Haverstraw Police Department using the video surveillance camera system located throughout the village.
Veras was the observed walking from the yard of a home near the middle school property. The loaded revolver fired by the defendant was later recovered in the yard.
The defendant’s trial began on February 24, 2012. Jurors deciding the case in the courtroom of Rockland County Court Judge William A. Kelly returned a verdict of guilty today following three hours of deliberations.
This case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Richard Kennison Moran.
